Marisja Smit’s solo exhibition in 2008“
@pulchristudio in The Hague.
Marisja: "I am fascinated by patterns and textures in nature. Thinking in patterns and structures provides me with a grip on reality, while choosing my subjects, but especially during the production of my work. Sections of cast body-parts form a composition on the wall. In a surrealistic way, this tapestry of latex reflects our society, naked. An image can induce a variety of feelings, different from person to person. “What do you see when you look in the mirror?” Conclusion of an investigation into the human body, the social environment and the taming of living material.” •
"Sculpting gives me the freedom to communicate. I find using text limiting, I prefer to express myself visually, often through basic shapes and rhythms. In evolutionary terms, all life finds its origin in the sea. Shells and fossils embody this ancient memory. My sculpture “Still Life” is a composition of sea creatures forged by repetitive patterns. For example the starfish is composed of hundreds of nipples, pieces of scrap, welded together.” •
