A sculpture out of spectacle glasses

ATM was approached by DGTL festival to make an artwork out of a waste stream: spectacle lenses, made available by Ace & Tate. To give a new life to the material, ATM invented a concept which takes full advantage of the multitude of glasses. By stringing the glasses on a steel cable and spacing them at random, strands originate, engaging in a play of light.

By combining the strands in different lengths a large hanging shape was formed. The many strands rustle in the wind like leaves and break the sunlight like water drops. The cloud shows a serene clearness in its tranquility and abundance. Because of its transparency it engages with its surrounding and reflects the outer world.

ATM finds a lot of inspiration in nature and through art, strives to make people more aware of her beauty. Refract is inspired by the way glowworms catch their prey. They live in a cave in new Zealand constructing bubbles of glue on a string of silk. They use the lines as an angler. Their glowing light above the structure lures insects in to the trap, to become a nice meal for the worms (Source: BBC Planet Earth, Caves, narrated by David Attenborough).

Refract was firstly shown to the public at DGTL festival 2019. Later that year it was exhibited at respectively Puchri Studio in The Hague and Young Stedelijk pARTy.
