Starfish and Shells
Year
2006
Dimensions
4m x 3,5m x 1m
Location

Sculpture made for group exhibition Het Paradijs in 2006, 24 professional artists with different cultural backgrounds were asked to depict their vision on paradise.

Evolutionarily speaking, all life comes from the sea. Shells and fossils are an ancient reminder of this. For Marisja, they form a universal image of the freedom people experience on the beach.

Her sculpture is a composition of shells, each wearing a different pattern, created by a repetitive action. For example, the starfish is composed out of hundreds of nipples -pieces of scrap steel- welded together.
